A one-armed sex fiend who raped 18 women has been jailed for 315 years.

Mhlonishwa Mathebula was nicknamed "the springbok" by South African police because of his ability to evade capture.

But today the evil 33-year-old was given the mammoth sentence for raping the women aged between 14 and 40.

Police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker said: "Mathebula, one of the most wanted criminals, managed to escape the net that had been repeatedly cast around him.

"He was extremely strong, agile and quick on his feet."

His right arm had been amputated below the elbow when he was a child - the result of being electrocuted.

The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said: "Mathebula's reign of terror is finally over and the public can take comfort in the fact that he will not be able to destroy anymore innocent lives."

Mathebula was described by a psychologist as "a danger to society".

He pleaded guilty in the Scottburgh Regional Court to 18 counts of rape.
